Project Scope: Extension of Grade II* Listed church

Project Industry: Commercial, Extension/Renovation

The origins of this Grade II* listed church date back to the Domesday book, and what is seen today was built between the 13th and 19th centuries.

More recently, the requirement for meeting spaces, WC and catering facilities started an 8 year redevelopment of this highly sensitive and challenging site, which includes subterranean burial vaults.

Designed by Hugh Cullum Architects, the new structure is a simple box, which appears as an extension of the high brick wall surrounding the churchyard, and a glass link connecting old and new.

A custom blend of handmade bricks and special burned headers, finished with traditional lime pointing, match the exterior walls of the historic church and boundary.

The delicate approach to this project resulted in a shortlisting for the acclaimed ‘President’s Award’ in the 2019 UK Church Architecture Awards.
